Charles Ngana: Black History Month Campaign Story

CBC is still continuing to showcase our students in celebration of Black History Month. Meet Ngana Charles Obinna.
Ngana Charles Obinna is a first-year PhD student in Physical Chemistry at the University of Arizona. He is currently part of Dr. Vanessa Huxter’s research group, where he is learning and practicing Time-Correlated Single Photon Counting (TCSPC). His primary focus is on understanding the fundamentals of photon detection, setting up laser devices, and optimizing experimental conditions for accurate time-resolved measurements. Additionally, he is gaining proficiency in MATLAB for data analysis and modeling, which is essential for processing the results from TCSPC experiments and supporting his research.
When asked why he chose the University of Arizona for his PhD in chemistry, he noted it was due to its excellent research opportunities and the expertise of its faculty members in his area of interest.
Originally from Nigeria, he earned his Bachelor's degree in Chemistry from Federal University Wukari and his Master's degree in Physical Chemistry from the University of Ibadan, both in Nigeria.
After graduation, he aims to work in the laser industry, applying his PhD research and technical skills to drive innovation in laser technology, particularly in spectroscopy, imaging, and diagnostics. His focus is on advancing scientific research and medical applications.
Throughout his academic career, he has faced challenges that strengthened his resolve, from balancing rigorous coursework and research to learning new skills and adapting to new cultures and environments. These experiences have instilled in him perseverance, time management, and the value of collaboration.
He notes - If you believe, you will defeat; stand up to your feet and say no to your defeat, believe and be the best!
