Black History Month Spotlight: Elizabeth Ghartey

CBC celebrates Black History Month 2026 with stories from students!

"My name is Elizabeth Ghartey, and I’m a junior majoring in biochemistry!

This Black History Month, I am reflecting on my motivations to pursue a biomedical research career. My love for science and research began with learning about sickle cell disease, a heritable blood disorder that predominantly affects Africans. Wanting to learn more about treatments for sickle cell led me to the hematology research that I’ve been doing throughout undergrad. In my future career, I hope to be a biomedical researcher that emphasizes the genetic and immunological basis of disease, and I want to mentor other Black STEM students so that we can thrive in the sciences and academia."
