CBC is showcasing Hispanic Heritage with Itzel A. Íñiguez's story.

"As a proud bilingual advocate, first-generation student and professional, and member of the Mexican community, I am passionate about expanding opportunities for students from historically underrepresented backgrounds and creating pathways for future generations in higher education.

Hispanic Heritage is a celebration of the stories, sacrifices, resilience, and cultural traditions that have shaped who I am. It is honoring the generations who came before us while recognizing our responsibility to create opportunities for those who will come after us. Hispanic Heritage reminds me that our languages, cultures, and lived experiences are strengths that deserve to be seen, valued, and preserved.

Language is more than a way to communicate; it carries history, identity, knowledge, and belonging. Growing up bilingual taught me that language can build bridges between people, communities, and generations. It allows us to stay connected to our families, honor our ancestors, and share our stories authentically.

For many students, hearing their language spoken or seeing their culture reflected in educational spaces can make the difference between feeling like they belong and feeling invisible. That is why I believe language and culture matter. They help create environments where people feel respected, understood, and empowered to succeed.

My heritage influences the way I show up for students every day. I understand the challenges many students face when navigating higher education, especially those who are first-generation, bilingual, or from historically marginalized communities.

I strive to be a source of support, encouragement, and advocacy while helping students recognize that their cultural backgrounds and linguistic abilities are assets, not barriers. Whether I am advising students, developing programs, or collaborating across campus, I hope to contribute to a more inclusive academic community where everyone can see themselves as scientists, scholars, and leaders.

I hope to help create a future where Latino/a/e students and other underrepresented students see belonging not as an exception, but as an expectation. I want students to know that they do not have to leave behind their language, culture, or identity to succeed in academia.

By mentoring, advocating, and helping build more inclusive educational spaces, I hope to contribute to a legacy where future generations can pursue their goals with confidence, knowing they are valued for all that they bring to the community." - Itzel

"Our language carries our history, our culture carries our strength, and our stories create pathways for future generations. Being bilingual/multilingual and bicultural/multicultural is not a barrier to success; it is a gift." - Itzel
