CBC Celebrates Black History Month by sharing stories about our students, alumni and staff.  Meet Alyss Humphrey, 1st Year PhD Biochemistry student.

Alyss was raised in St. Louis and attended high school in Chicago, where she developed her passion for research. As a Posse Scholar, a nationally renowned scholarship program, Alyss received mentorship and support, earning her bachelor’s degree in Biochemistry, Cellular, and Molecular Biology from Connecticut College. Now, as a first-year biochemistry PhD student, her research interest focuses on cellular stress and its role in disease to advance healthcare.

Alyss chose the University of Arizona for its commitment to academic excellence and fostering a diverse scientific community.
Her career aspirations are to use her knowledge to make a meaningful impact in research, mentorship, and supporting underrepresented voices in STEM. Alyss says she is inspired by honesty, kindness, and the ability to help others.

As Toni Morrison said, “If you want to fly, you have to give up the things that weigh you down.” Alyss aims to let go of doubt and fear and embrace knowledge and community to create a future where science uplifts and heals.
