2023 CBC Outstanding Students
Congratulations to the CBC Outstanding Students of 2023!
Here’s some background info on these amazing CBCers:
Gal Melman, Biochemistry Outstanding Junior
“My name is Gal Melman. I’m an immigrant from Israel studying biochemistry with the goal of going into medical research. I’m currently working in Jon Njardarson’s synthetic organic lab and enjoying every second of it.”
Jackson Taylor, Biochemistry Outstanding Sophomore
“Hi, my name is Jackson Taylor and I’m currently majoring in Biochemistry and Bioinformatics. I work in the Xiong lab developing antibodies for early HLB detection and am currently involved in troubleshooting IPTG-induced protein expression in E coli.
“Outside of academics, I have lots of fun with my community involvement on campus and in the greater Tucson area. I’ve tutored local students as part of the STEMM program, and I am currently volunteering with the Campus Pantry and acting as a member of the Student Health Advocacy Committee (SHAC).
“I plan to pursue either medicine or a position in the biotech industry in the future. Otherwise, I enjoy taking part in triathlons and cooking. I’ve been ramping up my training mileage with the goal of completing my first Ironman 70.3 by the end of the year.”
Momoko Cronin, Chemistry Outstanding Freshman
“Hello, I am Momoko Cronin, and I am a freshman majoring in Chemistry. I graduated from an extremely small high school and going to the University of Arizona has been extremely different but amazingly fun!
“I had the honor of joining the Gianetti lab last summer through the KEYS research internship. Our project's goal is to improve metal photocatalysts by adding an organic component, making it more versatile and financially and environmentally sustainable. I've really enjoyed doing research, and everyone in the lab is so kind and always willing to explain new concepts to me!
“Outside of the lab and classroom, I enjoy baking, sewing, and taking care of my five cute cats.”
