Our Mission
The CBC Graduate Student Council (GSC) is a representative body committed to promoting the interests and well-being of all graduate students in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry. Through close collaboration with department leadership, the GSC works to ensure that graduate student perspectives are reflected in departmental decisions, while also fostering improved communication, encouraging academic success, and promoting a sense of community among graduate students in the department. Above all, the GSC serves as the voice of the graduate students, ensuring that departmental policies and decisions incorporate student feedback.
The Council’s core responsibilities include:
Advising the department on matters affecting graduate student success, retention, support, and other critical issues.
Hosting Coffee Hours, town halls, and surveys for the graduate student body to identify and amplify the student voice.
Creating and overseeing a new mentorship program to support 1st and 2nd year graduate students, launched Spring 2025.
Each council member serves a 2-year term to maintain continuity and a smooth transition of responsibilities over time. New members are selected over the summer and begin their term in the fall semester. Each summer, two spots are chosen by the graduate students in an election, and 1-2 students are appointed by department leadership. We primarily seek members who are rising fourth years or below. However, all graduate students are eligible, and self-nominations are welcome. More information is disseminated via the cbcg listserv.
