2023 CBC Outstanding Graduate Scholarship Award: Anjalee Wijetunge
Congratulations to Anjalee Wijetunge for being selected as the 2023 CBC Outstanding Graduate Scholarship Award Recipient!
We asked for some insight into Anjalee's background, and here is what Anjalee had to say:
"I am Anjalee Wijetunge, and I am originally from Sri Lanka. After completing my undergraduate studies at The University of Colombo in Sri Lanka, I had the incredible opportunity to come to the United States in 2017 to pursue my higher studies. There, I had the privilege of conducting research under the outstanding mentorship of Dr. John Jewett in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry.
"Working on bioorthogonal chemical probe development for studying complex biological systems, I received excellent training that allowed me to explore new areas of science that I never imagined possible. I started my career as a synthetic chemist and later transitioned into the field of chemical biology. My research focuses on using chemical probes to better understand the gut proteome of mosquito larvae, with the ultimate goal of developing improved larvicides. This project was an incredible experience that challenged me to step out of my comfort zone and pushed me to realize my potential as an independent scientist.
"I am honored and grateful for the recognition given by The University of Arizona for my hard work. Throughout these years I have come to realize that seizing opportunities, having a fearless attitude towards failure, and extracting lessons from mistakes are essential elements for both personal and professional growth. My aspiration is to pursue research and mentorship in the field of biological chemistry, with the goal of bridging the gap between chemistry and biology."
