Abena Oduro-Gyaminah: Black History Month Campaign Story

CBC Continues to celebrate Black History Month by sharing stories of our students.
Abena Oduro-Gyaminah, is an undergraduate freshman with a double major in Biochemistry and Molecular and Cellular Biology. Abena was raised in Ghana and was born in Massachusetts.
Abena chose the UA because of its reputation for being an R1 university. There are many opportunities for students to have hands-on lab experience, which deeply interests her. Although she isn’t currently in any lab, it is one of her goals before the semester ends. After graduation, Abena plans to take a gap year researching infectious diseases, after which she plans to attend medical school.
Abena says her biggest inspiration comes from home, family and faith, and overall curiosity. “The culture and community I grew up in has always inspired a character of resilience and wonder, as well as that, I am naturally fascinated by the way things change over time, their progression and growth, especially in diseases. Learning about how persistent they can be makes me want to learn about the mechanisms overall and how they can be combated.”
