Michael A. Cusanovich was a distinguished Regents' Professor of Biochemistry and Molecular Biophysics and a dedicated teacher as well as an internationally renowned scientist. His area of research focused on molecular mechanisms of energy transfer in living cells. He spent his entire academic career of over 40 years at the University of Arizona and held several key administrative positions, including Vice President for Research and Interim Provost. He was also the Director of the Arizona Research Laboratories for 22 years.
Mike received his PhD in Chemistry from the University of California, San Diego. He did his postdoctoral research at Cornell University and began his career at the University of Arizona in 1969. He was a leading advocate for the development of the bioindustry in Arizona and and served as head of the Bioindustry Organization of Southern Arizona and as a board member of the Arizona Bioindustry Association.

The fund was established through generous contribution from family, friends, and colleagues in honor of Dr. Michael A. Cusanovich.
Purpose
The Michael A. Cusanovich Galileo Circle Scholarship shall support students in the following areas:
- Graduate College Ph.D. students in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry,
- Students in Graduate Interdisciplinary Programs (GIDP) whose research is focused on biological molecular mechanisms, and
- Undergraduate students in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry.
Eligibility
- Full-time students in a Ph.D. program or full-time students in an undergraduate degree program who are actively carrying out a research project in that program.
- 3.2 minimum GPA.
- Students may be allowed to receive the scholarship for more than one year.
Selection process
Students are nominated by the Department Head/Director. The final decision shall be made by the Galileo Circle Scholarship Committee.
