CBC is proud to announce this year’s keynote speaker for the CBC Convocation and Awards Program is Dr. Stephen Machatha’s Keynote Speaker.
Keynote Biography: Stephen Gitu Machatha is a biotechnology leader with a record of achievement in drug development. Dr. Machatha is a proud Arizona Wildcat, having received his bachelor's and master's degrees in chemistry from the Department of Chemistry and a Ph.D. in Pharmaceutical Sciences from the University of Arizona. Dr. Machatha is currently the Chief Development Officer at Aldeyra Therapeutics Inc., a Massachusetts-based, publicly traded biotechnology company developing a novel pharmaceutical platform targeting a class of toxic endogenous small molecules known as RASP (reactive aldehyde species) that are associated with many inflammatory, metabolic, and neurodegenerative diseases. At Aldeyra, he oversees drug discovery and clinical development and manages supporting functions, including technical operations, quality assurance, translational medicine, clinical operations, regulatory affairs, and intellectual property management. Dr. Machatha has worked in both emerging and mid-size biotech companies and has held scientific and product development roles of increasing responsibilities at Synageva Biopharmaceuticals, Cubist Pharmaceuticals, CyDex Pharmaceuticals, and ImaRx Therapeutics. He was instrumental in the development and subsequent approvals of multiple drug products, including KANUMA® (sebelipase alfa replace enzyme therapy), NEXTERONE® (ready-to-use Amiodarone HCl an antiarrhythmic agent), EVOMELA® (high dose Melphalan HCl to treat patients with multiple myeloma), and SESQUIENT® (reformulated room temperature fosphenytoin sodium to treat tonic-clonic seizures).
