This internship is sponsored by the National Center for Earth-surface Dynamics (NCED), Johns Hopkins University, and Portland General Electric (PGE). NCED headquarters is located at the St. Anthony Falls Laboratory in Minneapolis. At this lab, there is a model of the Sandy River and the Marmot Dam, which is where we did some pre-liminary research with stream restoration. The group working on this project consists of 4 other members with a wide range of backgrounds. Because I am the only one who is also studying life sciences, my research focuses on salmon spawning in the river. I am looking at the optimal grain size diameters for coho salmon spawning. This research will determine how dam removal affects salmon spawning habitat in the river.
