Professor Emeritus Robert B. Bates

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Professor Emeritus Robert Brown Bates on June 11, 2020. He is survived by his wife, Deanna. No information is available at this time about pending arrangements, but we will pass it on when we receive the information.

After completing his Bachelor of Science degree in1954 at Rutgers University, Robert Brown Bates earned his Ph.D. in 1957 at the University of Wisconsin. In 1963 he was hired as Professor of Chemistry at the University of Arizona. During his tenure at UArizona, Dr. Bates received the Graduate Teaching and Mentoring Award in 2000; was named the Outstanding Faculty Mentor of Graduate Students in 2000; and was the finalist for the Five-star Teaching Award in 1983. He also received the Welch Foundation Lectureship in 1977 and the Sloan Foundation Fellowship, 1967-1969. He retired in 2000.
