The overarching scientific themes of the Zheng research laboratories are 1) the development of new paradigms or coordination chemistry and molecule-based functional materials; and 2) the understanding of molecular and nanostructured materials that address the challenges in fundamental chemical science and practical technologies. The unique structural features, interesting properties, and potentially significant applications of transition metal and lanthanide-containing substances provide multifold impetus for our efforts. We focus our research efforts in seven scientific areas:
 
1. Lanthanide Clusters: Synthesis, property investigation, and applications of novel cluster compounds of the lanthanides
 
2. Heterometallic Magnetic Clusters: Exploratory synthesis and magnetic studies of mixed transition metal-lanthanide clusters
 
3. Lanthanide-Doped Magnetic Nanoparticles: Probing the effects of lanthanide doping on the properties of magnetic nanoparticles
 
4. Applications of Functional Nanomaterials: Assembly of luminescent and magnetic core-shell nanoparticles for biomedical applications
 
5. Catalysis by Transition Metal Clusters: Development of highly efficient multiple-site and recyclable Re-Se cluster catalysts
 
6. Functional MOFs Containing Transition Metal Clusters: Synthesis of Lewis acidic Re-Se metal clusters and their incorporation into a MOF for catalytic, electrochemical, and sensorial applications
