Chemical Additives Enable Native Mass Spectrometry Measurement

A CBC research team from the Marty and Pemberton labs recently published a new report in the Journal of the American Chemical Society describing how chemical reagents that modulate the charge acquired during electrospray ionization can be used to stabilize lipid nanoparticles for mass spectrometry analysis. This marks the first demonstration that the interactions of membrane proteins, which are critical drug targets, can be characterized within intact lipid bilayers by mass spectrometry. These new analytical methodologies lay the foundation to improve our understanding of protein, lipid, and drug interactions on the borders of cells.
