BLASTOFF! Is a week-long summer science camp for middle school students around the Tucson area designed to give students exposure to STEM, managed and coordinated by the UA Biochemistry Club. The camp is structured as an intensive day camp where “cadets” come to the University of Arizona for one week in June and participate in structured activities led by qualified university students and staff. These activities have been specifically designed to challenge students in scientific inquiry and understanding, while also being fun and mentally engaging. Activities include making microscope slides to view algae and protozoan (from turtle pond), human bingo, lab safety, Chemistry Club magic science show, zombie day, presentation of Osiris Rex, ice cream making, egg drop exercise, and a visit to the Flandrau Science Center. On the last day of camp, parents and other family members are invited to an informal poster session so they could see what their campers have accomplished and learned.
